MACMOT Art Academy focuses on seven fundamental elements within visual arts:
shape, form, line, texture, space, colour, and value.
Fundamental knowledge is so important when it comes to visual arts. Students will gain an understanding of the basic building blocks for visual arts. By teaching these principles, students will learn how to speak about art more effectively and will be able to practise these core skills on their own to grow their skills.

Examples of exercises
Most of the time, each class exercise will touch on multiple fundamentals, but we will discuss which ones are being practised as we work. We want the students to understand and build their artistic vocabulary and knowledge. We will look at masters’ work and learn from examples while pushing our own creative perspectives. Each class will have activities that are age and skill appropriate.
Shape – Learning to draw basic objects by breaking them down into simple shapes; patterns; drawing portraits and other objects within basic shapes
Form – Building forms out of paper and cardboard; papier-mâché; pop-up cards; understanding human proportions
Line – Contour drawing exercises; cross-hatching and pen techniques; ink-drawings inspired by Japanese brushwork
Texture – Creating collages using multiple mediums; practicing replicating textures using various mediums; tracing over textures
Space – One- and two-point perspective drawing; understanding distance using cut-out shapes; understanding foreground, middle ground, and background
Colour – Colour wheels; painting using only complimentary colours; creating pairings of complimentary colours;
Value – Shading; tints and tones of colours; charcoal drawings focusing on negative space
Our class structure is broken up based upon student grade level.
Grades 1-3
This class will focus on the fundamentals of visual arts and provide exercises that focus on developing those skills. The exercises will be made to be fun, yet challenging, for this age range. Emphasis will be placed upon ensuring the student is addressing the subject of the lesson. Instructors will use their discretion regarding increasing difficulty level of the lesson to address individual skill levels. Activities will never be marked with letter grades or pass/fail.
Class duration: 1.5 hours long
Grades 4-6
This class will focus on the fundamentals of visual arts and provide exercises that focus on developing those skills. At this age, students will have more challenging exercises than that of the Grade 1-3 class. The exercises will address the fundamentals but students will be encouraged to really understand their mediums they are creating with. Instructors will use their discretion regarding increasing difficulty level of the lesson to address individual skill levels. Activities will never be marked with letter grades or pass/fail.
Class duration: 1.5 hours long
Grades 7-9
Fundamentals are at the core of the lessons, like all lessons within MACMOT. At this age, students will be challenged to push their understanding of the concepts and mediums. These classes will want to encourage students to find their artistic voice and think about execution while they create. Activities will never be marked with letter grades or pass/fail.
Class duration: 1.5 hours long
